The Beginning:
I started my freshman year at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in fall of 2016. During my first semester my Quest l course was Religion and the Other taught by Professor Baltutis. From the beginning Professor Baltutis was an advocate for the Global Scholar certificate and mentioned it a couple of times in class. He finally persuaded me to declare the certificate after pointing how the world is becoming increasingly complex and interdependent. As a nursing student I realized that stepping out of my comfort zone and studying different religions, places and cultures would help me be a more culturally sensitive nurse in practice. After class I headed over the my academic advisor to declare the Global Scholar certificate and began my journey. The Middle: After declaring my Global Scholar certificate I spent my freshman, sophomore and junior years fulfilling the Global Scholar requirements in addition to taking my nursing courses. When I began my Global Scholar certificate my plan was to fulfill the global experience requirement by participating in the nursing study abroad clinical in India. Due to this I tried to chose classes that would help me prepare for my trip such as Hindu Myth and Religion and by the start of my senior year I had completed all the requirements besides the global experience. It was at this time that my nursing cohort was informed that the nursing study abroad clinical in India was cancelled. When I heard this I was disappointed because I had spent a lot of time preparing for a trip to India that was no longer going to happen. But even though my original trip was cancelled I still had a my global experience requirement to fulfill. So in light of the situation, I decided to participate in an international clinical that would take me to Argentina. This clinical experience would having me discussing and debating issues of gender inequality and femicide while comparing the public healthcare system of Argentina to the private healthcare system we have here in the United States. |
